    September 1, 2018

    Dear Roberto Clemente Families,

Happy School Year 2018-2019! On behalf of our staff, I would like to welcome our new pre-kindergarten students as well as our returning kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth, and fifth grade youngsters! It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I welcome you to what promises to be a marvelous experience – School Year 2018-2019 at The Roberto Clemente School – P.S. 13.

As your summer is winding down, it is my hope that you enjoyed this wonderful season to the fullest by carving out some time to relax, as well as engage in bonding activities with your child(ren). However, in a few days, the first day of school will be here. We are excited about the arrival of our amazing youngsters. Hence, teachers and support staff have already started engaging in creating childfriendly classrooms, organizing curricular resources, and modifying curriculum composition and pacing. Further, secretaries and office personnel have registered new students and collated packets to be disseminated to all students to share with their parents/guardians.

    First Day of School

Wednesday, September 5, 2018 will be the first day of School Year 2018-2019. Breakfast begins at 7:35 a.m. for students in kindergarten through the fifth grade. The official start time for the beginning of the school day is 8:00 a.m. Specialty teachers and other staff numbers will be present to greet the students as they arrive to assist and guide them to their accurate locations and classrooms. All classes will be dismissed at 2:20 p.m. for students in grades one through five. Pre-Kindergarten and kindergarten students will be dismissed at 11:20 a.m.

    Breakfast (Cafeteria)

All students eat for free in all public schools! Breakfast begins at 7:35 a.m. for students in kindergarten through the fifth grade. The youngsters are served a healthy breakfast each morning, as we are a Wellness School. Monthly breakfast calendars are available on the Department of Education (DOE) website. Chocolate milk is not served in our cafeteria. All students are encouraged to eat breakfast daily, whether it is at home or if you prefer for your child to eat breakfast at school.

    Lunch (Cafeteria)

We engage in three different lunch periods. Our first lunch period begins at 10:17 a.m. and the last lunch period ends at 12:55 p.m. Even though everyone eats for free, it is still necessary for each household to complete the DOE’s Meal Survey Form. Our cafeteria offers an extensive variety of lunches. Monthly lunch calendars are available on the DOE website.

    Bus Transportation

Some students are eligible for bus transportation, by way of the DOE. Visit the DOE website for more information. In addition, you can visit the school and request to speak with the Pupil Personnel Secretary, Ms. Buckner-Huggan who will assist you further. If your child qualifies for bus transportation, please advise him/her of the proper behaviors that must be exemplified during the bus rides to and from school.

I must thank the custodial staff for diligently working throughout the summer to thoroughly clean the entire building. This was done to ensure a happy entry by all to the building for SY 2018-2019. Currently, our Public Address System and clocks are being updated. Please note: Parent Teacher Association will be held the last Tuesday of each month (unless otherwise shared). Also, please check your child’s bookbag nightly for homework assignments and home-school communiques.

Finally, I am so excited to share that we applied for and was awarded a Reso A Technology Grant from the Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams in the amount of $500,000. As a result, all classrooms now have band new Smart Boards, all students will have individual technology in hands, and we now house a brand new Computer Lab.

I am excited about this new school year and I am looking forward to working collaboratively with each family.

    Best Wishes,

    Maxine Cameron
